ELA Tutoring

Writing

In writing-focused tutoring, students learn to understand the writing process, from brainstorming to research, outlining, drafting, and editing. Students practice key writing skills with fun activities like sentence stretching and work to develop confidence in their ability to put thoughts into words. Writing activities are catered to each student's interests, and students work to write a full essay from start to finish.

Reading

In reading-focused tutoring, students practice literacy skills to improve their reading comprehension. I will work with students to choose an appropriate book that matches their interests and we will work together to read and analyze. Students learn about different techniques for active reading and practice forming opinions about authors and writing. Students will work to write a review of the book they've chosen.

Vocabulary

Every ELA tutoring unit can include vocabulary; from vocab bingo to word invention, I have a variety of activities to make word learning fun. In addition, my background in linguistics helps students to develop a deep understanding of etymology that will help their vocabulary grow.

Grammar

I take a unique approach to teaching grammar based on my linguistics background. Students will learn about the social context of grammar and how it can be used to affect their speaking and writing. We will dive deep into the structures of English and how our brains process language to better take advantage of the student's intuitive understanding of English.

Exceptional Students

Exceptional students are any students whose learning needs and experiences put them outside the norm of the average American student. While I believe that every student has needs and experiences that make them exceptional, I know that some students have particular support requirements when it comes to English Language Arts. Whether it's the need for more enrichment and challenge, personalized support in managing executive functioning, or developing strategies for dyslexia, my one-on-one, student centered approach creates an opportunity for students to be seen as the individuals they are. With training on Universal Design and an extensive background in disability research and advocacy, I bring a unique perspective and set of tools to the table to help students succeed with the strengths they already have.

English as a Non-native Language

I have multi-level experience and training in teaching reading and writing skills to students for whom English is a non-native language (ESL, ELL, etc.). For ELL students from elementary to graduate level, communicating ideas in a standard, written English form can be a particular challenge. In addition, schools often fail to provide the one-on-one support that students need to truly engage with their English language skills and grow as writers and readers. I take a culturally-conscious and strengths-based approach to help students gain confidence and expand their understanding of the English language, including vocab, grammar, structure, and citation.
